The General Circle of Veterinary Medicine Students was founded in 1894. The name General Society of Veterinary Medicine Students (SGEMV), currently used, dates from 1902.

In 1975, under the leadership of Pascal Leroy, the SGEMV obtained non-profit status. Its Board of Directors is composed of eight volunteer veterinary medicine students, whose primary role is student representation within the various bodies of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Liège. The SGEMV is also responsible for organizing the Veterinexpo trade fair.
